I purchased my 2010 Chevrolet Aveo LT in April 2010 brand new. The reason I bought the Aveo was for the great gas mileage as well as its subcompact design. Recently in September 2012 my air conditioner began icing up on the low pressure line and I took it to an auto service center for diagnosis.
It turned out that there was a probable issue with the ambient air temperature sensor, but I was given an outrageous estimate of $700 for its replacement (I checked with other repair shops in my area and I was quoted in the neighborhood of $150, which is reasonable). A couple of weeks later I took my Aveo to the Chevrolet dealer for evaluation to see if it indeed was the ambient air temperature sensor; to my dismay I was told that the bearings in the compressor are getting ready to fail necessitating a replacement compressor in the neighborhood of $1400! I wrote to Chevrolet customer service expressing my disappointment with my 2010 Chevrolet Aveo LT and the issues I have been having including the ac compressor. In my letter I asked Chevrolet to please consider replacing the ac compressor under the powertrain warranty, as my regular warranty had expired (I did some vacations using my Chevy Aveo) due to the mileage. The response I got from Chevrolet was what I did not expect: Chevrolet willing to pay only $500 towards replacement of the ac compressor, leaving me responsible for $800. To add insult to injury, the customer service representative from Chverolet - whose name is Max - got very aggressive and shouted at me on the phone when he called me.
In other words, Max screamed at me while I was on the phone. I have owned other General Motors products where I have kept the vehicle past 60,000 miles and the basic warranty ran out such as two Oldsmobile Achievas and a Saturn L-300. In no case these vehicles have had an ac compressor failure. Needless to say, the way Max from Chevrolet Customer Service spoke to me on the phone was not called for and Max's actions represent poor customer service on the part of Chevrolet as well as General Motors. Based on my experience with my 2010 Chevrolet Aveo LT, I will never purchase a Chevrolet ever again. In fact, Chevrolet and General Motors has lost a loyal customer.
Update from Aug 29, 2013: I had the a/c compressor in the 2010 Chevrolet Aveo LT repaired at a local auto a/c repair shop. It turned out to be the bearings in the a/c compressor that needed repair. The repair bill came out to about $400 - much better than spending $1,400 for a replacement a/c compressor at the dealer and I could have received a remanufactured compressor for that money. Problem solved. After my experience with the 2010 Chevrolet Aveo LT, the vehicle was sold. Edward R., Tampa, FL, USA.
